The Los Angeles Rams may be preparing to move on from one of their longest-tenured offensive contributors — tight end Tyler Higbee — as second-round rookie Terrance Ferguson surges toward a larger role.
Higbee, 32, missed most of the 2024 season recovering from a torn ACL and enters the final year of his contract. Once a key piece of the Rams’ 2021 Super Bowl run, Higbee has struggled to replicate that impact in recent years. He hasn’t topped three touchdowns in a season since 2021 and managed just 8 catches for 66 yards and 2 scores in 2024. His declining production and $6.7 million potential cap savings post-June 1 make him a prime candidate for a trade or even release.
As Bleacher Report wrote in their article, ‘The Best Player Who Could Still Be Cut from Every NFL Roster In 2025 Offseason,’ “Los Angeles Rams tight end Tyler Higbee was a regular contributor in the offseason before missing most of last season following a 2023 torn ACL. Higbee, who had 495 receiving yards two seasons ago, is now 32 and entering a contract year. L.A. just used a second-round pick on tight end Terrance Ferguson, and it would have both Colby Parkinson and Davis Allen for depth if Higbee was released.
Ferguson — Oregon’s all-time leader in receptions and touchdowns by a tight end — whom the Rams selected with the 46th pick in April. Nick Baumgardner graded the pick, “One of the steadiest and most dependable tight ends in what is a terrific TE class, Ferguson is a great run-after-catch player who can win in the air at 6-5, 249 and could be a total beast in Sean McVay’s offense before too long. Need more from him as a blocker, though. I had Miami’s Elijah Arroyo, also a great athlete who would’ve been a fit here, a bit higher – but TE is absolutely a need for the Rams and this is a great fit. Grade: A-“
With Ferguson rising and Colby Parkinson and Davis Allen providing depth, the writing may be on the wall for Higbee. According to ESPN’s Steve Muench, Ferguson “has the potential to develop into a No. 1 tight end” and could make “an immediate impact.”
Higbee’s time in Los Angeles may be nearing its end — and he’s the biggest name on the Rams’ roster who could be cut.
