Luepke Reminding Cowboys Of His Best Quality Amid Offense Change

The processes have not been the cleanest through the offseason, but the Dallas Cowboys have reset their offense in some key areas. That started at the top with the decision not to renew head coach Mike McCarthy's contract back in January. 

Instead, they promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to that post and begun moving pieces around to prepare for Year 1 of the Schotty era at The Star. That meant a complete overhaul of the backfield with two new veterans and two new rookies entering the fold. 

Dallas doubled down on their ground game revamp, shockingly taking offensive lineman Tyler Booker in the first round of the draft. Finally, they capped this period of change with a head-turning trade for George Pickens at the beginning of May, adding a needed weapon to this offensive arsenal. 

The Cowboys have their core pieces still in tow with CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott leading the way. But how will these changes adjust the roles for other players, more specifically Hunter Luepke?

Dallas' fullback has been a do it all gadget piece in a sense, able to provide what the Cowboys needed based on circumstance. In recent years where the Cowboys lacked the talent punch offensively, Luepke gave them a carry, catch or block in a necessary spot. 

While the Cowboys undergo these changes, more of the same from the third-year player will ironically be his best way of contributing to his team's success. And from Schotty's side, the things he brings to the table will not go unnoticed. 

"I’d be remiss for not talking about Hunter Luepke," Schottenheimer told reporters this week. "He’s playing some (running back) for us, he’s playing some fullback, he’s playing some tight end, and all he does is do everything well."

Despite a slight resurgence, the fullback position has been phased out of the league almost entirely. However, its Luepke's versatility that makes him such an asset for the Cowboys. 

Now the remainder of the offseason and training camp will help determine what exact duties he will have and how those differ from what he executed under the McCarthy regime. 

But it's clear the Cowboys still recognize and appreciate Luepke's versatility. If they can continue to tap into that reservoir with the skill and ability already abundant around them, they will add another complexity to this promising offense.
