Mac Jones opens up about Brock Purdy quarterback controversy

The San Francisco 49ers found themselves at the center of one of the NFL's biggest quarterback debates last season when Brock Purdy went down with an injury and Mac Jones stepped in. As Jones continued to win games, outside speculation quickly turned toward whether San Francisco had a legitimate quarterback controversy. 

Looking back on that stretch during an appearance on Bussin' With The Boys with hosts Taylor Lewan and Will Compton, Jones made it clear he never viewed the situation the same way everyone else did.

Mac Jones shuts down idea of any controversy

"I've been on the other side of it ... I've been the starter and there was a little controversy. So I've been in Brock's shoes and there's no controversy. It is Brock's team, and I still believe that."

The most interesting part of Jones' response that he answered from experience. Earlier in his career, Jones dealt with constant questions about his own future as New England's starter. Instead of using his strong play to create leverage in San Francisco, he chose to support Purdy publicly. That likely helped prevent the situation from becoming a distraction inside the locker room, even as fans and media debated whether Jones had earned a larger role.

Jones clarifies there was never a competition

Jones did not stop at dismissing the speculation. He also explained why the relationship between him and Purdy never became a competition behind closed doors.

"That's my job as a backup quarterback ... Brock supported me really well ... It never hurts having two great quarterbacks in a room together."

Jones' comments highlight something that often gets lost when quarterback controversies dominate the headlines. Outside speculation may have suggested the 49ers had a difficult decision to make, but inside the building, the roles appeared to be well understood. 

Rather than allowing strong performances to create friction, Jones embraced the responsibilities that come with being a backup while Purdy continued supporting him from the sidelines. That type of relationship can be difficult to find in the NFL, where competition is constant and every opportunity has the potential to change a career.

49ers secret to success in the QB room

Jones' remarks hint at the secret to the 49ers' stability as an organization. While the world debated who should start at quarterback for the team, things stayed constant within the 49ers building. Purdy was the guy. 

Jones was ready to step in when his name was called. 

The most important thing is that there is a healthy level of respect between the two, allowing the 49ers to benefit from a quarterback room built on trust rather than competition.
