'Madden 21' patch eliminates Washington nickname, logo

On Friday, Electronic Arts announced that "Madden 21" will remove the current logo and nickname associated with the Washington NFL team.

As ESPN's Jacob Wolf wrote, physical versions of the game released on Aug. 25 will feature the old logo and name. Players will be able to download a patch that replaces both upon connecting systems to the internet.

In the official statement obtained by ESPN, EA said:

"The first changes will be available to our EA Access players and will include audio/commentary updates; motion graphics and presentation updates; stadium art, environments, crowd gear and signage updates; and uniform updates. Players may continue to see some outdated Washington references in other areas of the game at launch, but we are committed to removing all of those from the game in additional title updates coming shortly after launch."

On July 13, Washington announced the retirement of the logo and nickname deemed racist by many:

Earlier in the month, reports surfaced that the franchise could introduce a new name before training camps open on July 28. Also on Friday, the NFL Players Association confirmed the league wants camps to open as scheduled despite the worsening coronavirus pandemic.
