Patrick Mahomes’ 2025 season ended with a torn ACL, forcing Kansas City to complete the year without its starting quarterback and evaluate roster stability heading into 2026.
Mahomes suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during the Week 15 loss to the Chargers. The injury ended his season and confirmed Kansas City’s first playoff elimination since 2014. He underwent surgery to repair the injury and began rehabilitation immediately after the procedure. The organization has not released a timetable for his return.
Gardner Minshew entered the Week 15 game after Mahomes exited with the knee injury. He completed three of five passes for 22 yards with one interception, posting a 30.8 passer rating. It marked his first regular-season action with Kansas City.
Minshew signed a one-year contract before the season as the veteran backup. The team’s current depth chart lists Minshew as the active quarterback with Chris Oladokun providing depth. No additional quarterback moves have been announced since Mahomes’ injury.
Mahomes was sacked 31 times in 14 games before the injury. Kansas City ranks 19th in yards per play and in the middle of the league in third-down conversion rate. Pressure consistency and receiver separation remain core issues. The front office is expected to target offensive line help and perimeter efficiency in the offseason.
Mahomes has begun standard post-surgery rehabilitation following ACL repair. Typical recovery time for this procedure ranges from eight to twelve months, though no official return date has been confirmed. He remains involved in preparation and film review while continuing his rehab program. Kansas City will track progress through offseason activities and training camp.
The Chiefs will close 2025 with Minshew and Oladokun on the roster. The front office has not indicated plans for external additions or draft adjustments at quarterback. The primary focus remains on protecting Mahomes upon his return and stabilizing offensive efficiency. His contract and long-term role remain unchanged.
