Main Reason Steelers Won't Fire Mike Tomlin Revealed

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the most inconsistent NFL franchises throughout the course of the 2025 season. One week, it appears as if the team could potentially compete for a championship. Not shortly after, in some instances, it seems like the organization is very far away from having any kind of postseason success. A lot of fans have been critical of Head Coach Mike Tomlin, and rightfully so. While the leader of the collective has never had a losing season, he is also the architect of a unit that has failed to win in the playoffs for nearly a decade.

If the Steelers do end up collapsing down the stretch as they did back in 2024, the noise will be louder than ever in the Steel City. Mediocrity is not accepted in a town that expects its team to be competitive year-in and year-out. Tomlin's seat has never been too warm, but it could start to heat up if Pittsburgh somehow finds a way to miss out on the playoffs.

Mark Kaboly has been covering the team for over two decades, which always makes his opinions and reporting very respectable. He joined The Fan Morning Show on Tuesday to discuss the state of the organization. In an interesting twist, he believes that there is no way Art Rooney II will fire Tomlin, but not for the reason that the fan base may think.

"Let's put this in perspective real quick here," Kaboly noted. "I mean whether you think he deserves to be fired, not deserves to be fired, moved on [from], you're having one of your biggest events of the city, of the organization, with the draft coming [to Pittsburgh] in April and you're gonna be just wrapping up, or have a new coach. Do you think Art Rooney wants to do that or [with] a guy that's been [in Pittsburgh] 19 years and a guy that's under contract until the 2027 season?"

Kaboly's thought process may frustrate fans, but it is not a ridiculous take whatsoever. Rooney is incredibly loyal, which is why it shouldn't surprise anyone if, in the back of his mind, he wants Tomlin around for the 2026 NFL Draft that will be hosted by the city of Pittsburgh. Like it or not, the idea of the head coach not being around is not a strong possibility, despite what others around the league may feel.

Kaboly's comments are already starting to be discussed on social media. It may be looked at as a ridiculous reason for not considering firing Tomlin, but it's the current reality of the organization under Rooney's leadership.

The 2026 NFL Draft is going to bring millions of dollars to the city of Pittsburgh. The event should be a legendary one, and Rooney may truly believe that Tomlin deserves to be a part of it, regardless of how the 2025 campaign concludes. It will be an interesting month or two of speculation if the Steelers do begin to fall apart on the field.

Steelers Could Have A Chance To Draft The Future Of The Franchise In 2026

It's no secret that Pittsburgh needs to figure out a long-term plan at the quarterback position. Will Howard remains an intriguing individual to keep an eye on, but he will not be on the roster without having serious competition. The Steelers have some significant draft capital so depending on how the rest of the year goes, a trade up in the first round is completely possible.
