Malik Willis is Not the Best Idea

We have all discussed, debated, and argued whether Malik Willis should join the Miami Dolphins.

But let’s hold up here.

Willis will command a 25-30-million-dollar salary, and with the Dolphins cash strapped salary-cap situation, it makes more sense to me not to go that route.

Why not go with a bridge quarterback such as Geno Smith or Jimmy Garoppolo until the team can free up some cap space and draft a potential premier quarterback in 2027?

If general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and coach Jeff Hafley decide to go with Malik Willis, they are suddenly committed to their starting quarterback.

With just a limited amount of play time, is Willis worth the risk of that commitment?

Listening to both Sullivan and Hafley, they gave us fans the impression that their plan is to build the team through the draft, with younger and less expensive players.

Willis does not fit that mold.

Listen, I was all for Malik Willis joining the Dolphins.

The familiarity of our coach and general manager with Willis is hugely positive, but are we really in a position, both strategically and financially, to commit this early to a likely expensive quarterback?

The prospects of a successful season in 2026 are very slim at best, and, as fans, we are okay with drafting young players, possibly signing some younger free agents, and seeing what develops in the coming year.

The Dolphins cannot be all-in in 2026, not even remotely, so why commit now to a quarterback who has truly yet to prove himself?

I say we stick with the stated plan from Jon-Eric Sullivan and Jeff Hafley, and let’s build the foundation before we lose the objective.

Of course, we want to be competitive in 2026, but sometimes reality gets in the way.
