Malik Willis Shows What Dolphins Need From Their QB

A couple of weeks ago, I was very critical of Miami Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis after his 5th game. I thought the Dolphins should bench him for backup Kyle McCord because Willis held the ball too long, didn’t take what the defense gave him, and didn’t use his legs enough.

However, on Sunday against the New York Jets, I saw a different quarterback emerge from the bye week. Willis looked poised, confident, and decisive. It started on the first drive. He made quick decisions, found the open receiver, and used his legs, which led to the opening touchdown and the Dolphins’ first lead of the season.

I thought to myself, that’s not the Malik Willis. I saw the first 5 games of the season, and I liked it.

I don’t know what happened during the bye week, but that was a marked improvement. Maybe it’s the coaching staff getting him? Willis doing some self-reflection? Or maybe he just relaxed, didn’t get too tight, and, in the process, held the ball too long and hesitated because the play wasn’t open and he couldn’t find his 2nd or 3rd read?

I don’t know, but whatever it was, I’m glad. Willis has talent and ability. Sunday’s game was a glimpse of what he could be, but I have to see more consistency week in and week out.

Was he perfect?

No, but he looked more confident and decisive in his decision-making.

The Dolphins have 11 games left, and they must evaluate Willis. I know he has a $45 million guaranteed contract, but that’s peanuts compared to other starting quarterbacks, and this Dolphins regime wants everyone to complete.

If Willis keeps making strides like Sunday, we may not have to worry about taking a quarterback in the first round of next year’s draft.

I know that is months away, but Willis must replicate his performance the rest of the season to show that he is the quarterback moving forward. I still stand by what I said a couple of weeks ago and don’t think he is the answer at quarterback, but if I see more of what I saw on Sunday, maybe he will prove me wrong.

Sunday’s game was a good step in the right direction. Now replicate it.
