San Francisco 49er fans already had to suffer through their team blowing a lead to the Los Angeles Rams. Then, Mark Sanchez doubled-down on their pain with his comparison for Tutu Atwell's big late-game catch.
During a replay of the Matt Stafford-to-Atwell connection that would ultimately seal the Niners' fate, Sanchez said a bit too enthusiastically: "I hate to say it, San Francisco, but this one is almost Willie Mays-ish,”

As SFGate pointed out on Monday morning, Sanchez's comparison was a poor choice on multiple fronts. Not only did the USC Trojan turned Fox Sports commentator cite a San Francisco Giants icon when referring to a player in L.A. -- that's a huge no-no -- but he did so only a few months after Mays passed away.
"For Bay Area fans, any reference to Mays is still going to be a sensitive touchpoint, as it’s only been a few months since he died at the age of 93," the story summarized. "But for Sanchez to do it on a play that worked against the Bay Area team felt like a double-whammy, with many comments on social media reflecting that."

Sunday's game has no doubt left 49er fans feeling blue on Monday. Brock Purdy had a standout performance, completing 22-of-30 attempts for 292 yards and three touchdowns, while Jauan Jennings had a monster game with 11 catches for 175 yards and three scores. Still, the Rams were able to rally out of a first-half hole to get their first win of the season.
There is one silver lining heading into Week 4, which SFGate points out: Sanchez reportedly won't be on the call when the Niners host the New England Patriots.
