The New York Jets' offense needed more weapons to support Justin Fields, and that led them to draft LSU tight end Mason Taylor in the second round.

With rookie mini-camp getting underway as head coach Aaron Glenn oversees the entire class, it is the first time Glenn and the other coaches can see the rookies be put through their paces, both on and off the field.

With Taylor expected to jump straight into the starting role left vacant by Tyler Conklin, it is important for Mason to show he is capable of filling that void. And it begins the mini-camp.

And going by Glenn's words, Taylor has hit the ground running.

"Mason is exactly who we thought he was, he has dynamic movements," Glenn said. "He can really catch the ball – he does a good job catching the ball away from his body. He's quick to bring it in and get north and south exactly like we want, which is what we call knifing."

With the thought of utilizing Taylor's YAC (yards after catch) potential, Fields will ideally develop a good connection with his tight end so the LSU product can become his security blanket.

Garrett Wilson looms as Fields' only genuine weapon outside of Allen Lazard and Josh Reynolds, it is important for Taylor to get up to speed as quickly as he can in Tanner Engstrand's offense.

Taylor’s father is Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor, and that comes with some anticipation of what he might be.

“There’s high expectations, for sure, just because of the last name,” Taylor said. “But ... I mean, I love it. We’re family.''

Yes, it is only early in the offseason, and training camp will tell us a lot more about what to expect from Mason, but it is clear that he's hitting all the right notes as mini-camp begins.
