When Matt Eberflus was fired as head coach of the Chicago Bears, job interviews poured in. Four years of running a stout defense with the Indianapolis Colts backed up the defensive success he had in Chicago, albeit head coaching shortcomings.
According to multiple reports, Eberflus had multiple offers on the table when he accepted to become the Dallas Cowboys’ next defensive coordinator.
It’s fair to assume it wasn’t a difficult choice. Micah Parsons is enough reason to pack the bags to Dallas in a rush. But the Cowboys also have DaRon Bland, DeMarvion Overshown, Osa Odighizuwa, and other young foundational pieces to build around.
Those are reasons any coach would’ve had at the forefront of his mind when choosing to head to The Star. And while Eberflus probably thought about it, he recently revealed his reasoning and it included something many defensive coordinators would’ve never thought about: The quarterback.
“That was easy for me, no. 1, the Jones family and the familiarity with them (. . .) that to me was No. 1,” Eberflus told the Doomsday Podcast during an interview. "Secondly (. . .) really, to me, it was Dak Prescott. When he was a rookie, we drafted him here and at one point we were 9-1. I know what's inside his heart and what kind of man he is, what kind of leader he is. So that was a slam dunk.
Eberflus did clarify his interviews happened before he learned Brian Schottenheimer would become head coach. "He's going to be a great leader," he said.

Another surprising reason why he chose to come back?—Dak Prescott.

Eberflus’ words reinforce what Cowboys fans and media members have known for years. Prescott is beloved in the building. His leadership on and off the field is a driving force for the organization.
But also, it speaks about his faith on No. 4 and how much he believes he can win it all in Dallas. Not every day do you hear a defensive coordinator say he picked a team because of the quarterback, someone he won't even get to coach. At least not closely at all.
But for Eberflus, Prescott was near the top of the list.
