Matt Eberflus reveals 'three hurdles' Justin Fields must clear to play

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus is playing his quarterback situation close to the vest.

Aside from reaffirming his day-to-day injury designation, the first-year head coach wouldn’t divulge any information Wednesday on injured starting quarterback Justin Fields, who Eberflus he’d like to see three things from before he returns to the Bears’ lineup.

"It's really just day to day," Eberflus told reporters regarding Fields’ progression. “So if he…like those three hurdles we talked about — if he feels really comfortable and feels great and his mobility and strength's back for the medical staff. And then as we, GM and head coach, look at it and say, 'Hey, green light.' Then it's a green light. So, we'll see it during the course of the week. But this is on a one-week thing."

Fields didn’t play in last week’s 31-10 loss to the New York Jets after suffering a separated left shoulder the previous week against the Atlanta Falcons.

Prior to his injury, Fields had really come on strong down the stretch. He had a passer rating of 99 or better in three of his last four starts while combining for 1,064 yards passing and rushing over that four-game span.

Fields was a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice, and Eberflus said he’ll continue to take reps while splitting time with Nathan Peterman and recently acquired Tim Boyle.

“I’m just going to go out there, and if I feel like I can help my team win, help my team score and put points on the board, then I’m going to go out there and play,” Fields said on Wednesday. “We’ll just see how practice goes and see how I feel.”
