The season is over for Matt LaFleur and the Green Bay Packers. The Packers suffered a heartbreaking defeat to the Chicago Bears on Saturday, 31-27. The wild card matchup between these two storied rivals went down to the wire, but it was the Bears who came out on top to book their place in the divisional round.
Questions about LaFleur’s future immediately arose after Saturday’s crushing loss. The Packers have now lost in the wild card round two seasons in a row. The loss to the Bears extends Green Bay’s Super Bowl drought streak to 15 years. The Packers last won the title in 2011 with Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers at the helm.
LaFleur’s future with the Packers is now surrounded by uncertainty. The 46-year-old’s current contract with the team expires at the end of the 2026 season. According to a previous report by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Packers and LaFleur have a “mutual goal of extending his contract” after the end of the current season.
However, after Saturday’s elimination from the playoffs, it now remains to be seen if the Packers will offer a new deal for LaFleur.
On Monday, less than 24 hours after their season-ending loss to Chicago, LaFleur took the podium for his end-of-season press conference. He revealed that he had spoken to Packers CEO and President Ed Policy on the team plane after Saturday’s defeat.
LaFleur was asked if he expects to be back next season. The Packers coach responded with an honest statement.
"That's not the focus right now, to be honest with you,” he said, via Ryan Wood of USA Today. “We're fresh off this loss. My sole focus is on our players."
LaFleur refused to address his future with the team directly. He implied that conversations about his status will happen soon.
LaFleur has been with the Packers since 2019. In his seven seasons as the team’s head coach, LaFleur has a record of 76-40-1 in 117 games.
