The Green Bay Packers beat the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday, 23-19, in preseason Week 2. Despite the win, there are some reasons for concern at the bottom of the roster. Head coach Matt LaFleur decided to protect the starters, so one third of the 90-man roster was inactive.
From the players who performed, three left the field with injuries: Safety Omar Brown, rookie edge defender Barryn Sorrell, and running back MarShawn Lloyd.
The most concerning update came about Omar Brown, a recent camp standout who had a big performance on Family Night two weeks ago with three interceptions. He suffered a chest contusion and will stay in Indianapolis to check his situation.
"Omar has a scary deal," LaFleur detailed. "He'll be staying overnight, but he's got a chest contusion."
In regards to Sorrell, the Packers' biggest addition to the edge position in the offseason, it's a knee injury suffered on a special teams play during the first half. There isn't clarity about the extent of the problem, though, and the Packers will evaluate the fourth-rounder when the roster gets back to Green Bay.
The third injured player is, once again, MarShawn Lloyd. The running back has handled several injuries since being a third-round pick by Green Bay last year, and he left the field with an apparent injury after making a 33-yard catch. Tom Silverstein reported it as a hamstring tightness.
When asked about how Lloyd was doing, LaFleur wasn't definitive.
"We'll see," the coach replied.
The Packers get back to the final week of training camp on Tuesday. On Thursday, the team will have a joint practice with the Seattle Seahawks in Green Bay, before the preseason finale at Lambeau Field next Saturday. Ten days from now, general manager Brian Gutekunst has to reduce the roster from 90 to 53 players before the start of the regular season.
Since last year, up to two players can be placed on the injured reserve on cutdown day, before making the initial 53-man roster, and be designated for return after missing at least four weeks. This is a useful roster tool, and it can be important for the Packers with how they will handle so many injuries.
At least, quarterback Jordan Love is expected to return to practice this week and will be good to go against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 7.
