Matt LaFleur raves about Jordan Love’s relationship with Packers QB coach

As the Green Bay Packers begin the Jordan Love era, head coach Matt LaFleur hinted the most important rapport his 24-year-old quarterback has is not with any of the team’s pass catchers, but with quarterbacks coach Tom Clements.

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, LaFleur detailed the improvements Love has made recently, crediting the amount of work he’s put in with Clements in the four months since the season ended.

“I think Jordan's made some huge strides; I really do," LaFleur said. "And I think a lot of it is a credit to Tom, and just, he knows how to train these guys. He knows how to drill them and he's very, very consistent. He doesn't sugarcoat anything. He just is matter of fact and I think there's no doubt."

Clements was hired ahead of the 2022 season after two years as the pass game coordinator/quarterbacks coach in Arizona. There, he helped Kyler Murray win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award (2019) and make his first Pro Bowl (2020).

It was Clements’ second stint with the team after serving as Green Bay’s quarterbacks coach from 2006 to 2011 before moving to offensive coordinator from 2012 to 2014. During that time, Aaron Rodgers made four Pro Bowls and was a three-time All-Pro selection, winning two league MVPs, a Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP under Clements’ tutelage.

Despite Clements rejoining the team because of Rodgers last year, he chose to stick around in 2023 to help Love transition into his new role as QB1 — something the Utah State alumnus presumably appreciates.

"I asked Jordan after the season how he felt about him and he said he loved Tom, and thought he did a hell of a job helping him, you know, develop over the course of the year," LaFleur said. "For me, it was a no-brainer. It was just whether or not Tom wanted to come back, so I'm happy he wanted to be here, and you know, we're lucky to have him.”
