The Green Bay Packers didn't sign Davante Adams back, you already know that. And he got a significant two-year, $44 million deal from the Los Angeles Rams, which is probably part of the reason why Green Bay wasn't a big consideration after all.
However, the Packers did consider bringing the veteran wide receiver back at some point during the offseason. It's unclear how deep the conversation was, but head coach Matt LaFleur admitted that the front office and coaching staff talked about it.
"I think anytime you have a player of that caliber, there are definitely conversations that go into it," LaFleur said on the 'Up and Adams Show' last week. "Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't."
Back in 2022, the Packers applied the franchise tag to keep Davante Adams around, but the receiver requested a trade to the Las Vegas Raiders. The Packers granted his request, moving him for a package with first- and second-round picks. Last season, Adams reunited with Aaron Rodgers to play for the New York Jets, but he was released earlier this year and hit free agency for the first time in his NFL career.
Even though the Packers weren't able to re-sign Adams, LaFleur shows a lot of respect for his former player. They worked together for three seasons.
"Davante is a guy that I got a ton of respect for in terms of who he is as a player," LaFleur added. "Certainly, it speaks for itself, but it's no surprise he has become the type of player he has become. Just how he approaches the game, he is the ultimate competitor. I feel like he treats practice like it's game day, and that's why he became what he has become."
The Packers drafted Davante Adams in the second round back in 2014. After a relative slow start to his career, the receiver established himself as one of the most impactful offensive players in football. Adams has made the First-Team All-Pro three times (2020, 2021, 2022), and the Pro Bowl six times. He led the NFL in touchdown receptions twice.
Now, the challenge for Adams is to play for a competitive team once again. After failed collective experiences with the Raiders and Jets, Davante joined Matthew Stafford and the Rams with the expectation to be a real contender in the NFC. Perhaps, Adams' path may take him to Green Bay in some way in the near future.
