Matt Rhule: Panthers believe in Sam Darnold

New Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold admitted that the New York Jets trading him to Carolina last week after the Jets drafted him third overall in 2018 "stings a little bit."

While speaking with reporters, Panthers head coach Matt Rhule noted the franchise thinks Darnold can play at a "high level" with his new employer.

"We believe in Sam," Rhule said of the 23-year-old, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "We believe in his skill set. We believe in his approach. … I don’t think there’s a game you watch, he doesn’t make a play where you don’t say 'there it is.' I think his arm talent, his movement, are a great fit for the guys here that he’ll be playing with."

Alper added that Rhule did not directly confirm Darnold will be his starting at the beginning of training camp sessions. However, it's widely assumed Carolina will exercise the fifth-year option attached to Darnold's contract. The signal-caller will earn roughly $18.8 million, fully guaranteed, in 2022 under that option.

The Panthers have not yet picked up the option but don't have to declare any final decision until May 3. Rhule is expected to make Darnold the front-runner to win the starting job for at least Week 1 of the regular season.
