Matt Ryan never considered leaving Falcons for fresh start

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is entering his 14th season with the franchise, and it's a time of significant change. Because of the shake-up, Falcons owner Arthur Blank said last year that Ryan would have a chance to leave in 2021, but the Boston College product never considered a move.

In a recent interview with Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, Ryan said he loves playing for the Falcons and wants to remain with the franchise "for a long time."

"It never crossed my mind," Ryan said. "I mean, I know that there's been lots of that in the NFL right now. A lot of people, specifically at the quarterback position, moving in different directions. And everybody's situation is unique. For me, I never wanted to do that. I love being here. I love being a part of this organization. Arthur Blank has been incredible to me, from the minute I was drafted. He's incredible to my family. So I'm thankful for that opportunity. I love being in this city, living here. It's home for my wife and I and our kids. And it's a good place to live. And I want to stay here. I want to be here for a long time. For me, it never really was a part of my thinking."

Since reaching the Super Bowl LI, blowing a 28-3 lead to the New England Patriots, the Falcons have failed to impress and haven't reached the postseason since 2017.

The Falcons had their worst season since 2013 last year, going 4-12 under a combination of Dan Quinn, who was fired, and Raheem Morris, who took over as interim head coach.

The abysmal campaign resulted in Atlanta making several changes. The franchise hired Arthur Smith as head coach and Terry Fontenot as general manager and also parted ways with star wide receiver Julio Jones.

Fontenot drafted standout rookie tight end Kyle Pitts this offseason instead of selecting a quarterback in the first round.

If the franchise has another unsuccessful season in 2021, Ryan could be on his way out in favor of a younger quarterback. For now, though, his job is secure as the Falcons don't have high expectations for the campaign.
