Matthew Judon Released By Miami Dolphins In Harsh Move

Matthew Judon woke up Thursday as a free agent. The Miami Dolphins, fresh off blowing their playoff hopes and opting to give rookie Quinn Ewers reps under center, made a move that surprised even some of their own fan base.

One of the NFL’s most respected pass rushers, Judon was waived with three games left in a season the Dolphins will want to forget. It marks the end of a short and underwhelming stint in Miami, but the beginning of what could be an unexpected chapter for the 33-year-old veteran.

What the Dolphins’ Decision Means

Miami’s decision to release Judon feels like both a practical move and a turning point. The Dolphins are officially out of the playoff race, and at this stage of a lost season, teams often shift their focus to the future. Keeping a high-profile veteran on a one-year deal that hasn’t yielded pressure or sacks made little sense in a year where younger players need reps. Judgment calls like this are rarely purely about performance, but Judon’s lack of sacks and minimal impact on the pass rush made his roster spot expendable.

General Manager Champ Kelly and Head Coach Mike McDaniel are clearly moving the organization toward evaluation mode. With standout youngsters like first-rounder Chop Robinson waiting in the wings, the front office apparently decided it was time to see what’s already under contract rather than squeeze a few more weeks out of a veteran whose best years are statistically behind him. It’s not a gutless act; it’s pragmatic roster management at a crossroads.

Matthew Judon’s Legacy and Career

Judon’s career is one of genuine NFL respect. A fifth-round pick out of Grand Valley State in 2016, he turned into one of the league’s most consistent edge rushers over nearly a decade. Before landing in South Florida, Judon earned four Pro Bowl nods and delivered seasons of double-digit sacks, especially with the New England Patriots, where he became a feared, gritty force off the edge.

But this season in Miami never really clicked. Thirteen games, three starts, and only 19 tackles with few splash plays on film was not the way a player of his résumé wants to go out. For a guy once lauded as one of the fiercest competitors in the AFC, the lack of sacks carried a quiet sting for fans and perhaps for Judon himself.

What’s Next

Now Judon hits the waiver wire and becomes one of the NFL’s most intriguing late-season commodities. Teams with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations should be watching. Rumors already point to potential interest from clubs like the Patriots and Ravens, as well as others who could use a seasoned voice and rotational pass-rush help. There is still value in a player who has carved out a long career through sheer will and technique.

For Miami, this move also tells the rest of the roster something: youth and evaluation are now priority one. For Judon, it’s a chance to remind the league who he was at his best. Monday mornings will now include calls from coaches and executives weighing not just where he fits, but also where he can still help. That’s the curious duality of Judon news today: an ending for one chapter and, very possibly, the start of another.
