The Los Angeles Rams, led by 17th-year quarterback Matthew Stafford, have been absolutely dominant as of late. They have now won four straight after going on the road and defeating division rival San Francisco 49ers. On this winning streak, the Rams have won each game by at least two touchdowns, and are arguably now the best team in all of football.
Stafford has always put up good numbers throughout his career, but because those Detroit Lions’ teams were not successful overall, some viewed those stats as empty calories. He now has a Super Bowl victory in his pocket, and his current squad is perhaps gearing up for another deep run. Stafford, therefore, could be on his way to solidifying himself amongst NFL immortals.
Saying that Stafford has been playing great as of late is an understatement. He has thrown 14 TDs and zero picks over this four-game stretch. He has a five-touchdown lead over the QB the Rams traded to acquire Stafford back in 2021, Jared Goff.
Stafford has been showing the same arm talent and velocity he exhibited during his younger days. If he continues at this pace, he could easily walk away with the MVP, especially considering the condition he was in before the season began.
What Stafford is doing at this point in his career is incredible in itself, but doing so while dealing with persistent back issues makes it that much more amazing. The first overall pick in 2009 missed the entire preseason due to an aggravated disk in his back. Reports suggested that sitting out during the preseason was more about maintenance than injury, but even still, managing back problems while playing QB at age 37 is pretty impressive.
What’s key here is the word “issues”, which is different from an injury. An injury usually means you are out for a period of time and then come back fully healed. That’s not what is going on in Stafford’s case; this is an ongoing issue he will likely have to play through for the rest of his career. He seemed fully prepared to deal with that reality, according to his statement when the regular season began.
Whatever happens, happens. I’m playing like I always play. I got no issues with a physical game.
Having that mentality, especially taking into account the spinal cord contusion Stafford had before this latest issue, makes the story thus far this season that much more astounding.
Arguments can be made that part of the reason why Stafford and the Rams have been so successful as of late is the level of competition. The Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars both rank in the bottom ten in terms of passing yards allowed. The New Orleans Saints are just bad overall, and the San Francisco 49ers are without both Fred Warner and Nick Bosa.
There are opportunities to silence any would-be critics in the upcoming weeks. Five of the next seven games for the Rams are against opponents who rank in the top half of the league in total yards allowed. That includes two tough matchups against division rival Seattle Seahawks and a road matchup with an Atlanta Falcons defense that is allowing 162.3 passing yards per game (best in the NFL).
If Stafford can continue taking care of business in the back half of the season, there will be no denying just how excellent this year has been. From there, this Los Angeles team has just as good a chance as anyone to play for a Lombardi Trophy in February.
The 17-year journey for Stafford has been fascinating, and he may have saved his best act for the end of his career. He is currently on pace for over 4600 yards through the air, 47 passing TDs, and only four interceptions. Considering that he is approaching age 40 and has back trouble, it would definitely be the best season of his career.
That should be enough to grant Stafford an MVP award, which would also likely mean an All-Pro and Pro-Bowl selection. The MVP and All-Pro are the two glaring omissions from his resume. If Stafford accomplishes all three this season, here is what his list of achievements will look like.
That resume would surely be enough to dispel any remaining doubts and earn Stafford a Hall of Fame bust in Canton.
