Claims of MetLife Stadium being on fire spread through social media on Friday, accompanied by photos.
The venue, home of the New York Giants and New York Jets, was shown in images with thick black smoke rising from it… or so it appeared.
“Current scene at MetLife. It’s actually on fire,” one Giants fan account shared.
Another account claimed there was “FIRE near MetLife Stadium. We’re off to a good start in NY… .”
“Wow, the players really don’t like that turf!” someone joked in the comments.

MetLife is not actually on fire. While there was one, the smoke was the result of a blaze in Bergen County, a few miles away.

NJ.com reporter Victoria Gladston had details.
Authorities said the fire in Carlstadt was“under control” but was still being fought.
“The two-alarm fire is burning through a building on Washington Avenue, which is less than three miles away from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford,” Gladstone wrote.
“Carlstadt police said officials received reports of the fire at around 9:50 a.m. Friday. There have been no reported injuries, according to police.”
Rumors of the stadium being on fire followed a major development.
Crews began installing a natural-grass playing field at the stadium on Thursday, which would have ordinarily come as good news to NFL fans.
However, the new field will be used only for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, with MetLife Stadium among the venues.
“It’s only justice that the best players on the planet get the best grass on the planet, and we’re trying to achieve that,” FIFA senior pitch manager David Graham said.
The artificial turf at MetLife has been the scene of many high-profile injuries over the past several seasons.
FIFA is hoping to avoid such.
