Jeff Hafley sees promise in Miami’s receiving group, but his enthusiasm comes with a qualification. The players still have substantial development ahead.
Asked about an offense spreading the ball around against New England, Hafley described a room in which Malik Washington has taken on leadership alongside several inexperienced receivers.
Hafley also highlighted receivers Jalen Tolbert, Caleb Douglas, Chris Bell and Kevin Coleman Jr. His assessment of encouraging contributions was tempered with the need to keep getting better.
“There needs to be constant improvement and development,” Hafley said. “They just haven’t played very much.”
“It’s new scheme,” Hafley said. “It’s a new league for them.” Experience is part of the challenge for a group he described as still learning its way.
“There’s a bright future there,” he said.
“They just have to continue to work really hard,” Hafley said. “That starts today again in practice. But I am excited about that group.” His optimism was about potential still to be developed, not a finished product.
Malik Washington is still developing his own game, but Jeff Hafley said Miami’s receiving-room makeup has already pushed him into a leadership role.
“Malik Washington’s still a young player in this league,” Hafley said. “He’s kind of in a role where he looks around and it’s him and a bunch of rookies. I give him a lot of credit for … taking on a leadership role probably sooner than he would have thought.”
Hafley explained his play on the field has excelled and has been going according to plan.
“He’s been really consistent,” Hafley said. “He’s caught the ball. His run after catch has been really good. He’s very reliable to be where he’s supposed to be.”
Washington is carrying those responsibilities while continuing his own development.
“He’s still working on his game,” Hafley said.
As other players gain experience and return to fuller participation, Hafley sees Washington providing a dependable presence while growing into responsibilities that arrived early.
