Miami Dolphins’ 0-3 Start: A Historical Perspective

To the surprise of many, for the second straight campaign, the Miami Dolphins have kicked off their season by dropping their first three games. Miami has now suffered losses to the Las Vegas Raiders, San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs in 2026.

So, what does NFL history tell us about how the remainder of the Dolphins’ season will play out after such a difficult start?

Well, to be blunt, history doesn’t paint a positive picture for Miami.

Specifically, anyone still wearing rose-colored glasses and hoping for a playoff berth should firmly throw that possibility out of the window. After all, it’s proven to be almost impossible to rally all the way back from a 0-3 start to make the playoffs, as only seven teams have accomplished such a feat in all of NFL history.

Shorten the sample size to this century, and it’s only been pulled off twice — both by the Houston Texans.

The seven teams throughout NFL history that went from 0-3 to a playoff berth relied partly on luck to make such an incredible turnaround, too, whether that be favorable schedules or playing in weak divisions, and luck is not on the Dolphins’ side this season.

Not only is their schedule one of the NFL’s toughest in terms of strength of schedule, but their most dynamic offensive player, running back De’Von Achane, just recently suffered a season-ending knee injury against the Kansas City Chiefs.

All in all, the typical outcome for a team that starts the season 0-3 is to finish with single-digit wins and not even come close to sniffing the playoffs, and by all accounts, that will be the Dolphins’ fate. Plus, all of the double-digit losses that they have suffered so early on in the year seemingly only further reduce the odds of a huge turnaround.
