Miami Dolphins announce the player who will take Christian Wilkins' jersey number
Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Christian Wilkins and the number 94 with the Miami Dolphins became synonymous with each other during the former's time with the team.  The Fins' standout lineman was a steady and productive force on the interior during his time in South Florida.

Now, fans will have to get used to seeing someone else wearing 94, and the team announced on Friday who that someone will be.  Free agent addition Teair Tart will be the next to don the number.

Tart is a logical choice, as he's perhaps the best of the slew of free agent defensive signings the team made this offseason to try to help fill the void left by Wilkins' departure for the Raiders.  Tart signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins back on April 8.

Tart represents in a number of ways the opposite of Wilkins.  While Wilkins was the Dolphins' first round pick in 2019, Tart was an undrafted free agent who signed with the Titans in May 2020.  Wilkins, with his explosive first step, has racked up 20.5 sacks, tallying a career-best 9 last year.  Tart has 2.5 career sacks.

No one is asking Tart to become Wilkins.  He's frankly not on that level, but then again, few are.  However, Tart does have promise in getting into the backfield.  According to the Dolphins, Tart's 4.2% tackle for loss rate was the sixth-best percentage among NFL defensive tackles last year.

Now, Miami fans will get to see if he can continue that rate this year with a target on his back.  One on the shape of a 9 and a 4.
