Miami Dolphins GM Chris Grier grades his roster building as mixed

Miami Dolphins GM Chris Grier started the rebuild in 2019. Does he believe it has been a success? It does not sound like it, based on Grier's comments.

Five years into a rebuild, it should feel or be spoken with more conviction regardless of whether it is a failure or success. Chris Grier seemed reluctant to answer and was unsure how to gauge his team building from the past five years. 

Reporter: "Chris you started this rebuild in 2019. Trading veterans, and accumulating draft picks, five years in do you think it is been a success?"

Grier replied: "Uh, it is a little mixed. And I only mean that because it is now year two with Mike (McDaniel). Ya know, we won nine games a year ago, and 11 this year. We have taken steps, I think we have a good roster. So, whether success or failure, I will leave that for you guys to judge. But, we are building something good that we feel good about. We are looking forward to continuing that in the off-season towards next year. "

Grier should not be hesitant to say that he has done a pretty solid job of building this team and roster into a consistent playoff contender. Does he need to add more pieces to finalize this roster and make them a Super Bowl contender? Absolutely. 

The veteran GM is heading into an offseason with major contractual decisions on players like Tua Tagovailoa and Christian Wilkins that could shape the future of the franchise.

Biggest offseason ahead 

How Grier decides to handle pending free agents and extensions has yet to be seen. Nonetheless, Grier has done well enough during his tenure to earn some trust from the fans and media.

This off-season will tell everyone everything they need to know about Grier's long-term hope as the Dolphins GM. He has drafted well at times and missed on others, which is normal to an extent. Here is a look at the Dolphins' draft selections over the years.

Heading into the third year with Mike McDaniel as the head coach, Grier must capitalize and round this roster into a team that has more than one wild-card playoff game in their future. Otherwise, things could look bleak for Grier's future.
