Miami Dolphins Make Final Decision on Quinn Ewers After NFL Preseason

Long before Quinn Ewers was battling with former New York Jets first-round pick Zach Wilson for a backup role, he was a five-star recruit who will forever be remembered for bringing the Texas Longhorns back.

However, despite two back-to-back College Football Playoff runs and leading the program to its first conference championship since 2009, Ewers slid in the 2025 NFL Draft. He was the 14th and final quarterback taken, and ended up falling to the seventh round, where the Dolphins nabbed him with pick No. 231.

With Miami, he has an opportunity to push for the backup role behind Tua Tagovailoa, and as of Monday, his fate with the team was revealed.

Quinn Ewers Makes Miami Dolphins 53-Man Roster

When the Dolphins announced who they'd be parting ways with, the former Texas quarterback was not one of the players who received the unfortunate news. This comes after Ewers shook off a rough start to the NFL preseason, and ended up shining in the team's final two games.

Here is how Ewers' stats looked in his first three NFL preseason games:

  • 23-of-43 passing (53%)
  • 273 yards passing
  • two touchdowns, zero interceptions
  • 88.6 passer rating

Did Ewers Win His Position Battle Against Zach Wilson?

There has yet to be a formal announcement on the depth chart positioning, and head coach Mike McDaniel recently admitted he wouldn't overreact after Ewers' breakout game in the team's second preseason game against the Detroit Lions last week.

“I’m definitely not going to overreact to results, considering I talk about the process all the time," McDaniel said. "I would be speaking against my own. But I think the biggest thing is that guys...You find things to see if guys can improve upon. Both of those guys have done a great job."

However, Wilson has logged more passing attempts than Ewers in two of the preseason bouts. While Ewers appears to have a ways to go before he is a play away from being in the game, making the roster as a seventh-round pick is an accomplishment in itself.
