The Miami Dolphins are the latest team to fill their head-coaching position, and they have continued the NFL’s recent trend of hiring young coaches with backgrounds as offensive assistants.

The Dolphins announced on Sunday that they have named Mike McDaniel their next head coach.

McDaniel, 38, had been an assistant on Kyle Shanahan’s staff with the San Francisco 49ers for the past five seasons. He served as run game coordinator from 2017-2020 before being promoted to offensive coordinator last season. McDaniel was with the Falcons for two seasons before that when Shanahan was Atlanta’s OC.

There were nine head coaching vacancies in the NFL this season, and seven have now been filled. Of those seven, six teams hired coaches with backgrounds in offense.
