Miami Dolphins New DC Praised by Top Defensive Player
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins are looking to take another step forward in 2024. This comes after the Dolphins finished 11-6 in 2023 and made another appearance in the wild card round of the playoffs.

However, at their best, some people expected to see the Dolphins make the Super Bowl next season. You can argue that their defense held them back at some points last season. Now, one notable defensive player reveals that a change in defensive coordinator could help this team tremendously moving forward.

Miami Dolphins S Jevon Holland Praises DC Anthony Weaver

This past offseason, the Miami Dolphins made a change at defensive coordinator. That change came after the Dolphins and former DC Vic Fangio mutually agreed to part ways. After that, the Dolphins hired Anthony Weaver to replace him.

Now, the team is starting to take part in organized activities together. Dolphins S Jevon Holland is one player who noticed an immediate change in atmosphere according to Cameron Wolfe of the NFL Network, calling it “a complete 180.” Holland also emphasized how well Weaver relates to the players.

Miami Dolphins’ 2023 Defensive Issues

The Dolphins had some defensive issues that held them back in 2023. Because they had the top scoring offense in the NFL last season, some of these issues slid under the radar.

So, what are some of the top things the Dolphins struggled with last season? For starters, Miami allowed a lot of points. The Dolphins ranked 22nd in points allowed per game (23) last season.

The pass defense could also use some improvement. While they ranked slightly better in that category, the Dolphins were still just 15th in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game (221.2) last season.

Potential in 2024

While the Dolphins did allow a considerable amount of points every game, the defense did show signs of potential in 2023. If you look at the Dolphins’ total yards allowed per game as well as their rushing yards, Miami ranked quite good in both of those categories.

So, what did those numbers look like? The Dolphins ranked 10th in total yards allowed per game (318.3) and seventh in rushing yards allowed per game (97.1).

What does this tell you? It should tell you that the Dolphins already have the foundation to do well defensively. The main issue is allowing fewer points per game. If the rest of the team feels the way Holland does about Weaver as a defensive coordinator, there should be some trust built to work on that main issue going forward.
