Malik Washington does not care what position appears beside his name. As the Miami Dolphins head into their bye week searching for answers after a 31-24 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, the wide receiver is focused on being useful wherever the offense needs him.

Washington has lined up at receiver and in the backfield, a growing role that reflects both his versatility and Miami’s effort to create opportunities in an inconsistent passing game.

“I’m just trying to be a football player and trying to help in any way I can,” Washington said Monday. “I’m not going to turn down anything they’re asking me. So I’m just trying to be prepared and ready for whatever they want.”

The bye arrives with the Dolphins showing flashes of progress but still undermining themselves with mistakes. Washington said the break offers every player a chance to evaluate his own contribution.

“We’re getting better,” Washington said. “I think we’re seeing improvement through the games, but there’s still some mistakes that we’re making that we’re shooting ourselves in the foot.”

For the receivers, improvement begins with details and communication. Washington said the group must stay aligned with the quarterback, offensive coordinator and receivers coach, then finish when opportunities arrive.

That standard includes Washington. He took responsibility for an early deep ball that fell incomplete, saying he drifted too far outside before trying to correct his route.

“I want to take blame for that,” Washington said. “We got to connect on some of those shots, and a lot of it’s on me. I got to be better for him, and I think we’ll get that fixed.”

Washington also pointed to toughness and cohesion as qualities Miami can carry beyond the bye. He praised the receivers’ blocking, the hard running of the backs and the offensive line’s willingness to push the pile.

“We are playing together,” Washington said. “We want to be tough and we want to play tough.”

Even in the South Florida heat, which Washington said was apparent before kickoff, the Dolphins continued to compete. The next step is turning that physical effort into cleaner execution and more consistent production.

The bye week will provide time for corrections, but Washington’s immediate agenda is simple – rest, recover and perhaps go bowling. When Miami returns, his larger assignment will remain unchanged – line up wherever needed and make the next play count.
