For the first time ever, the Summer Olympics will feature flag football at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
Similar to how MLB players can represent the country in the World Baseball Classic and NBA basketball players can take part in the Olympics, the argument has been raised in football with the addition of the sport into Olympic competition.
Since it's official adoption over two years ago, many NFL players have spoken out about their desires to participate. One of those was the always outspoken defensive menace on the Dallas Cowboys, Micah Parsons.
Micah has joked in the past saying, "After 2027 ima take a break from football to prepare for the Olympics!"
Well, he might not have been joking.
Next week, league owners will meet to discuss logistics and consider the possibility of NFL players competing in the Olympics. Thursday, the league did announce that the events' schedules align nicely for the start of NFL season.
“Assuming this resolution passes, scheduling conflicts with the 2028 Summer Olympics should be relatively minimal,” Tom Pelissero wrote. “The games are scheduled to be held in Los Angeles from July 14-30, putting the Gold Medal game the same week teams report to training camp.”
If the resolution passes, fans around the world will get to see the league's biggest stars in action. However, only one player per team would be sent to the event, along with a designated international player from each team.
Would Micah be that player for the Cowboys? Maybe CeeDee Lamb, or anybody else?
NFL.com says no.
Amid rumors of this proposal, writer Nick Shook penciled his prediction of a 12-man roster Team USA could trot out ... and it did not include a Cowboys player.
"With this in mind -- in addition to the framework of 12-player rosters, a 50-yard field and a 5-on-5 format that won't feature offensive or defensive lines -- let's whip up a roster that might only exist in dreams, yet could become reality a few years from now," Shook said.
QB: Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens
RB: Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles
WR: Justin Jefferson, Minnesota Vikings
WR: DK Metcalf, Pittsburgh Steelers
TE: Brock Bowers, Las Vegas Raiders
Offensive Sub: RB Jahmyr Gibbs, Detroit Lions
DT: Calijah Kancey, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
MLB: Fred Warner, San Francisco 49ers
CB: Patrick Surtain II, Denver Broncos
CB: Sauce Gardner, New York Jets
CB/WR: Travis Hunter, Jacksonville Jaguars
Defensive Sub: CB Tariq Woolen, Seattle Seahawks
Taking the veteran linebacker Warner over a younger and more explosive Parsons won't go over well with the "lion-backer", as we call him.
"I’m gonna go win an Olympic gold medal because I can’t do it in track and I can’t do it anything else but I know I can play some flag football," he has said.
He's going to have some work cut out for him if he wants to replace the likes of Justin Jefferson, Patrick Surtain and Saquon Barkley, but we appreciate the confidence. Micah never lacks there.
While not a direct translation from NFL rules, five-on-five flag football would be a sport the United States is expected to win, lending itself to a special moment in front of the home crowd.
There is also no better international pedestal to display our great game to the world than the grandest stage in all of sport.
Plus - whether Micah gets the nod or not - the NFL could equip a star-studded roster that will wow the crowd with ease.
