Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons has formally requested a trade, he announced Friday on social media. Parsons requested the trade after contract negotiations with the Cowboys reached an impasse.
“Unfortunately, I no longer want to be here,” Parsons wrote. “I no longer want to be held to closed-door negotiations without my agent present. No longer want shots taken at me for getting injured while laying it on the line for the organization, our fans and my teammates. I no longer want narratives created and spread to the media about me.
“… I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys. My trade request has been submitted to [Cowboys CEO] Stephen Jones personally.”
Thank you Dallas

The Cowboys have no intention of trading Parsons, per Dianna Russini of The Athletic. Hours before Parsons submitted his official trade request, Russini reported that Parsons was considering taking “drastic measures which could include a trade request.”
Parsons, 26, is entering the final year of his rookie deal. The two-time All-Pro pass rusher revealed that he initially approached the Cowboys about a contract extension after the 2023 season. Dallas “did not want to start any negotiations at that point.” Fast forward to this past March, Parsons met with Jones to talk about leadership. Parsons said the conversation shifted into a discussion about his contract. He informed Jones that his agent, David Mulugheta, would reach out.
When Mulugheta reached out, he was told the deal was “pretty much already done” — this wasn’t the case. From there, the Cowboys “went silent,” according to Parsons.
“Up to today, the team has not had a single conversation with my agent about a contract,” Parsons said. “Not one demand has been made by my agent about money, years or anything else.”
Parsons, the 2021 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, has made the Pro Bowl in each of his four NFL seasons and is a two-time First-Team All-Pro selection. He earned Second-Team All-Pro honors in 2023. Parsons has tallied double-digit sacks every season, totaling 52.5.
Parsons is on the shortlist of the best pass rushers in football. The Cleveland Browns’ Myles Garrett and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ TJ Watt and the Las Vegas Raiders’ Maxx Crosby belong on that list — all have gotten paid this offseason. The Cincinnati Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson is the other standout pass rusher seeking a new contract and like Parsons, requested a trade earlier this offseason.
Parsons, to this point, has not been a training camp holdout. He arrived at Oxnard for Day 1 on July 22, and he has been present since. Ahead of the beginning of training camp, Parsons acknowledged the end of his Cowboys career might be on the horizon.
“I’ve been pretty consistent,” Parsons said. “If they don’t want me here, they don’t want me here. I’ll go about my business; I understand the nature of the business. Like I said, as long as I’m here and under contract, I’m going to do what I have to do to perform at the highest level. But if this is the end, this is the end.
“Same way the Joneses — Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones — take care of their family. It’s the same way I need to take care of my family. I got my own three kids of my own, so I need to take care of my own family at the end of the day.”
