The Green Bay Packers are expecting big things from linebacker Lukas Van Ness in his third year in the NFL. The former first-round pick from the Iowa Hawkeyes football program is already off to a great start, even though his performance last Sunday against the Detroit Lions has been overshadowed by the mere presence of Green Bay newcomer Micah Parsons.

Van Ness even had a higher Pro Football Focus rating in Week 1 than Parsons. Van Ness got a 68.7 rating, while Parsons only had a 66.0 grade.

Parsons will also be the first one to tell anyone the exciting future of Van Ness, who had half a sack in Green Bay’s 27-13 win over the Lions.

“I’m telling you, I think Van Ness is going to have his best year yet this year,” Parsons said, per Rob Demovsky of ESPN. “I’m going to make sure of it. That guy, he’s a very selfless player, like very selfless. He’s one of them guys that can go anywhere. He plays the run, he does everything. He’s the high-quality player that you just want to be around. I’m going to make sure that guy gets as many plays as possible.”

Micah Parsons expresses appreciation for new teammates on defense

On Tuesday, Van Ness shared an Instagram post showing glimpses of the game between Green Bay and the Lions. It also came with a caption that read: “It’s that time

.”

One of the slides in the gallery showed a video of Van Ness and Rashan Gary celebrating Parsons’ first-ever sack as a Packer.

Parsons reshared that post and added “These great teammates,” while tagging both Gary and Van Ness.

The Packers’ defense has truly become a much bigger threat with Parsons in the fold, but it also goes beyond what he can bring to the table on his own. His chemistry and influence on his new teammates should also help Green Bay’s stop unit operate better as a whole than as the sum of its parts.

It will be interesting to see if Green Bay can sustain its form on defense and contain Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders’ attack this Thursday.
