Micah Parsons' Week 1 Status vs Eagles in Doubt After Jerry Jones' Latest Comments

There just may be no bigger laughing stock in the NFL right now than Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones for how he's handled Micah Parsons' contract situation.

The longtime executive has seemingly dug his heels in despite being publicly dragged by Parsons, his star pass-rusher.

The 26-year-old defensive end put Jones on blast last week on social media, revealing that he wasn’t comfortable negotiating his contract extension without his agent David Mulugheta present despite Jones’ persistence that he and Parsons had already agreed in principle to a new deal.

Jones has since doubled-down on the ordeal, stating he hasn’t spoken to Parsons to pick up talks since he publicly requested a trade last week.

“What it is, is what it is,” Jones told reporters Tuesday at training camp. “We'll work through it, or we will not work through it.”

Parsons is entering the final year of his rookie contract, which carries a $24 million cap hit in 2025. Considered a top-five pass-rusher in the league, Parsons is likely looking for the kind of money both Pittsburgh’s T.J. Watt ($41 million per year) and Cleveland’s Myles Garret ($40 million per year) both got on their recent extensions.

Until he gets anything close to that kind of money, Parsons seems content with sitting out — even if that means his holdout drags into the regular season, which is a very real possibility, according to Jones.

“No, absolutely not,” Jones told reporters on Tuesday about whether he expected Parsons to play in Dallas’ season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4. “A big part of that is his decision. How would I know that? I’m just saying. No, but I’m urgent. … We will work through it or we will not work through it.”

While Parsons’ fate is ultimately up to Jones and whether he is OK with dishing out the kind of mega contract Parsons wants, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer insisted he believes cooler heads will eventually prevail.

“We’re still planning on moving Micah around and putting him in all the spots that we see him and using our fronts the way we want to see it,” Schottenheimer said. “We go about our business every day. We live in the moment. We focus on the moment. Like I said the other day, I expect Micah to be here.”
