All eyes were on Dallas for Sunday Night Football between the Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers, with star pass rusher Micah Parsons returning. There, the two sides battled to a 40-40 tie in what will go down as one of the games of the NFL season. Amid all of that, for Dallas legend Michael Irvin, it was Dak Prescott who stole the show.

On the Monday following the game, Irvin appeared on First Take. There, he defended himself and the now much-maligned Cowboys. In particular, however, he would mount a defense of Dak Prescott, who he said is playing at an MVP level.

“Let me tell you guys how happy I am,” Michael Irvin said. “Because you set me up for an ambush that didn’t go down, didn’t you? Yes, you did, Stephen A. Yes, you did. Let’s stop playing around. You know what I mean… You wanted to see the Green Bay Packers run roughshod around the Dallas Cowboys, and then I come on and be a punching bag that you can knock around all day, but it didn’t go down quite like that. You understand what I’m saying? It didn’t go down like that.”

Dallas was without star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb for the game. That put more pressure on the rest of the offense, including Dak Prescott to perform. That’s exactly what Prescott did too. He’d end up throwing for 319 yards and three touchdowns in the tie.

“I’m not saying I’m happy with the tie,” Irvin said. “But the results and how they got there, I pulled a lot of great things out of. First of all, you guys can talk about it. Green Bay had their very best on the field all game long. The Dallas Cowboys didn’t have their very best on the field. He was sitting on the sideline, but the rest — since the best was out, the rest stepped up and they made plays. All the receivers made plays. George Pickens just showed why he’s been talking like he’s been talking. ‘I can be a No. 1 if you give me these opportunities, if you give me this MVP quarterback.’ That’s what Dak Prescott is playing like right now, the MVP.”

Amid all of that, Irvin did have some issues with the game. That, notably, included the clock operator. After all, on Green Bay’s final play of the overtime period, they struggled to get a snap off and it seemed like the clock could or should have run out, but didn’t. That allowed their last second field goal to tie things up.

“If they had somehow won that game — wait, wait. Let me start with this joker, who the hell ran that clock last night? If I ever see that joker, oh, imma tackle his head. Are you joking? You let that thing come down slowly to press that clock. Oh, game over? Game over. Nothing you can do about that. We need to find that dude, I need to talk to that dude,” Irvin said. “And I need to make sure he don’t ever clock again in Dallas. That was absolutely crazy.”

Amid all of that, Michael Irvin isn’t happy to finish with a tie. What he is, however, is proud of how the team played. That effort is something that should translate to future success this season.

“But I am proud of the fight. Each week we talk football. Each week we talk football, we’re trying to determine and discern what’s in a football team. What I saw in that football team, after they fought against the champions in Week 1 and they fought against this champion that everybody made a champion in Week 1 because you wanted to pour more dirt on the Cowboys’ grave, oh, y’all shipped Micah Parsons to Green Bay and now they’re a championship team. Yeah, okay. You see what I’m saying. So, yeah, I’m real proud of the fight the boys showed up with without No. 88 and showed what they had in them,” Irvin said.

“I ain’t ever happy with a tie, but I’m happy with the results that I see that reside within my players, because like I said, I’ve got somewhat of an opportunity this year. Yes, I’m happy to be here. I’m ambushing y’all.”

The Cowboys are headed on the road next week. There, they’ll look to get back on track against the New York Jets.
