Michael Irvin makes shocking Super Bowl confession

“I love champion mindset because nowadays it seems like it’s different. Like, it’s not about winning championships,” Irvin added on the Champion Mindset with Daniel Cormier podcast.

Irvin was frustrated by the idea of committing total effort to the game without securing a championship above all else. He suggested that today’s football often celebrates individual achievements, stats, or financial success more than championships.

For him, a player’s legacy is defined by titles. Irvin measures success by Super Bowl wins. He spent his entire 12-year career with Dallas after being selected in the first round of the 1988 NFL Draft.

He helped Dallas win Super Bowl XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX, forming the “Triplets” alongside QB Troy Aikman and RB Emmitt Smith.

Irvin finished his career with 750 receptions, 11,904 receiving yards, and 65 touchdowns before being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007.

The Cowboys came close to continuing their dominance in the mid-1990s, but fell short of winning more championships.

For Irvin, those missed chances are more significant than the titles already secured, highlighting the standards he set for himself and the team throughout his career.

While speaking on the Championship Mindset, the former Dallas Cowboys star highlighted the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers, where the Cowboys were defeated by 38-28 in the 1994 season.

“I wanted to catch that thing and extend that thing and race with a touchdown,” said Irvin on the same podcast. “And I did, and Deion caught my hand. I thought it was a PI, and they didn’t call it. That one play right there, no matter what, I think about every day of my life…I think about that one play because nobody’s ever done three in a row.”

This is a painful moment for Irvin because it cost them a chance to complete a historic three-peat, which could have led to an unprecedented fourth consecutive Super Bowl title, a feat no NFL team has ever achieved.
