Michael Penix Jr. has a chance to quickly become the face of Atlanta sports. No matter the success of the respective organizations, football is king in the south, and Falcons fans have been dying for the slightest glimmer of hope, which Penix provided them over a three game stretch to end the season.

The 2024 8th overall pick made throws that typically only appear in video games, while also showcasing an innate ability to perform in clutch situations. Several times over the final two weeks, he led game-tying touchdown drives in the fourth quarter, and he did all of it while remaining relatively mistake free over his first 12 quarters as the Falcons’ starting quarterback.

It has fans in Atlanta giddy about what’s to come, and several prominent figures are giving Michael Penix Jr. their stamp of approval, most recently, Robert Griffin III.

Penix’s ability to throw into tight windows can be matched by very few people that have ever walked the face of the earth. The arm strength is up there with the best in the league, but the accuracy and his ability to do it with guys in his face are what give him the ceiling of an elite quarterback at the NFL level. But this next part from Griffin should also have fans salivating at what the Falcons offense could potentially look like in offensive coordinator Zac Robinson’s second season with the team.

After being heralded as the next great offensive mind during last year’s hiring cycle, Zac Robinson underperformed compared to expectations in his first season with the Falcons. However, it’s not as if he was dealt the easiest deck.

Quarterback controversy immediately entered the building after the Falcons drafted Michael Penix Jr. a mere weeks after handing Kirk Cousins $180 million. But beyond that, Cousins was never anywhere close to 100%, which limited his mobility and really shrank Robinson’s playbook, who almost never demanded his veteran quarterback to move from the pocket.

Once Michael Penix Jr. was named the team’s starter, that changed immensely, and the explosive plays were much more common because of it. Now, the two will have a chance to work together all offseason, with Robinson sorely focused on Penix’s strengths and weaknesses. The importance of those extra reps cannot be overstated and could result in Penix improving exponentially from year one to year two, a scary thought for the rest of the NFC South.
