The Washington Commanders revealed a new jersey this week, titled their ‘Super Bowl era’ alternate uniforms. The new look instantly brought back the nostalgia of days gone by, and the uniform closely resembles that of an era many fans want to bring back.
Ever since purchasing the Washington Commanders , owner Josh Harris and the ownership group, which includes NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, have denied any potential of returning to the team’s previous name. Mike Florio, while acknowledging that fact, believes the jersey reveal points in a different direction, with specific reasoning.
In 2024, the New York Jets made their throwback uniforms, titled the ‘sack exchange’ uniforms, a permanent feature. The change followed their attempt to modernize the style of their unis with ‘New York’ brandished across the chest.
Those didn’t last long, and the return to a familiar style the fans know and love went down extremely well. Other teams have also followed the modern restyling in recent years, including the Atlanta Falcons and the Washington Commanders.
Washington moved to a gradient style with the numbering on the uniform, while also placing the city name on the front of the jersey. Those jerseys were met with plenty of controversy as the team moved further and further away from the recognisable brand the fans were so well connected with.
Now, the new jersey reveal swings the pendulum back the other way. Rather than trying to erase their history, Washington are leaning into it. The reveal showed Jayden Daniels, Zach Ertz and Jeremy Reaves in the new uniforms, with the slogan ‘weaving past and present’.

Mike Florio, in a post on NBC Sports, noted that the reveal seemed to almost hide the current logo of the team, which is the letter ‘W’ in gold font. The logo only features on the side of the helmet, and the reveal doesn’t try to show that off in any way, anywhere in the graphic.
“I feel like they’re in the process of tiptoeing toward going back to the old name, and they might do it at some point between now and 2028. Or maybe they do it in line with opening their new stadium.”
The potential name change reared its head again this week after President Trump said he would bring the old name back.
“You want me to make a controversial statement? I would [change it back].” He went on to say, “I wouldn’t have changed it. It doesn’t have the same ring to me.”
The Commanders are currently in the process of trying to agree on a new stadium in Washington DC, at the old RFK site, which could require the support of the President. If that is the case, perhaps bringing back the name he openly endorsed would help get that over the line.
The Washington Commanders new throwback jerseys have been a major hit. JJ Watt commented on the team’s official reveal post saying, “Make ’em permanent.”

Make ‘em permanent.
Former quarterback of the franchise Robert Griffin III agreed, stating:
“The Washington Commanders should take the alternate designation off the “Super Bowl Era” alternate jerseys and make them the PERMANENT jerseys. Fans love them and never wanted them gone in the first place. Clean, crisp and beautiful.”
Fans are now starting to believe the Washington franchise is headed towards a reset, bringing back the original name that was controversially retired in 2020.
Now in 2025, Josh Harris is seeing significant momentum in the conversation around his team’s name, and its unlikely to go away anytime soon.
