Mike Greenberg Gets Ripped For NFL Draft Suggestion

As the NBA world reckons with Monday's wild draft lottery results, Mike Greenberg argued that the NFL should adopt the same concept.

On Wednesday's Get Up, Greenberg urged the NFL to follow the NBA's lead and implement a draft lottery. Perhaps the ESPN host just wanted to help his company by pitching what he believes could be "the highest-rated show in the history of sports television."

"Football needs a draft lottery," Greenberg said. "It would be great for the league. It'd be great for the fans. Literally everyone would watch it."

However, many fans aren't on board with Greenberg's suggestion. Skeptics argued that an NFL draft lottery is unnecessary since tanking isn't as prevalent as in the NBA.

"Football doesn't need a draft lottery," a fan declared. "This is the dumbest take of all time."

"The NFL and NBA operate in entirely different ways," a fan said. "If the NFL were to adopt the draft lottery system, it would quickly become very clear how it just does not work."

"NFL teams don't tank," a fan claimed. "NBA teams still do despite having a lottery process for draft order. So something that has proven not to work in the NBA is going to solve a problem that doesn't exist in the NFL?"

"You wanna fix something that isn't broken?" a fan asked. "Nope."

"We're in agreement, that's a no for this idea," a fan determined. "Now let's convince the NBA to get rid of it too."

Greenberg disagrees that intentionally losing isn't an issue in the NFL. He called tanking a "scurge" and "the worst thing in sports" before noting that a record 10 NFL teams had a winning percentage below .300 last season.

The ESPN host believes a lengthier schedule could worsen the problem. While the New York Giants and New England Patriots each fell from the No. 1 spot because of late victories, Greenberg reminded everyone that the Baltimore Ravens covered as 20.5-point favorites over the Cleveland Browns, who secured the No. 2 pick with a Week 18 loss.

"A lottery is a good idea because it makes losing less valuable, and it makes for pretty terrific drama as well," Greenberg said. "It is the best idea basketball has had in a long time and it would be — if you will excuse a mixed metaphor — a slam dunk for football."
