Arizona Cardinals rookie running back Jeremiyah Love will miss Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams, but head coach Mike LaFleur believes the time away can help his development.
LaFleur said watching other running backs can offer lessons while Love rests an ankle injury. The rookie missed practice all week and was ruled out for Sunday’s matchup.
The coach pointed to Detroit Lions star Jahmyr Gibbs as an example of studying elite players, after Love watched Gibbs last week.
#AZCardinals HC Mike LaFleur says there are some benefits of Jeremiyah Love sitting out and observing, while he rests his ankle.

“There’s always benefit for all these guys’ positions to sit back,” LaFleur said. “I thought last week for him to be able to go watch Gibbs, you’re talking about one of the best players in the world… and he’s only gotten better since he’s gotten in the league.”
LaFleur acknowledged that playing remains the best way for a young player to develop, but only when healthy enough to perform. Forcing Love to play while limited would not help him.
Love, the No. 3 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, has dealt with ankle trouble this season. He aggravated the issue against the New York Giants in Week 4.
Against Detroit, Love managed 22 yards on 12 carries. His left ankle continued to bother him, leading Arizona to hold him out.
The Cardinals have not indicated that Love will be placed on injured reserve. LaFleur said the team will keep evaluating the injury, leaving open a return when the rookie is ready.
Arizona enters Sunday’s matchup at 1-4 and will turn to Tyler Allgeier, with Bam Knight behind him. Love’s absence removes an option from the backfield as the staff prioritizes his recovery.
LaFleur’s message was measured: Love can learn by observing Gibbs, but that experience is no substitute for playing when healthy. Arizona needs patience as its top pick works back toward the field.
