Mike McCarthy: Dak Prescott on track in rehab from ankle injury

The Dallas Cowboys awarded quarterback Dak Prescott with a four-year contract extension in March that could be worth up to $160 million even though there remain worrisome questions about how he'll fully recover from the compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle that he suffered in the Oct. 11 game versus the New York Giants.

Prescott required a clean-up procedure on the ankle in December, but Dallas coach Mike McCarthy told reporters on Tuesday that the signal-caller "is right on track or maybe a little ahead of schedule" in his rehabilitation.

"I was very impressed with his progress," McCarthy said after watching Prescott complete a workout on Saturday, per Todd Archer of ESPN. "Just coming off the type of injury. His footwork, he's doing all the normal movements that you look to do in a quarterback-school format this time of year."

McCarthy added: "He's right where he needs to be for this time."

The 27-year-old two-time Pro Bowler is expected to be ready for training camp sessions and preseason games, but it's unclear if Dallas will have him take the field for meaningless August matchups. Of course, Prescott will eventually have to face a live defense and get comfortable playing on the surgically repaired ankle, but nobody associated with the franchise needs to think about that reality in late April.
