Mike McDaniel to be Part of the General Manager Hiring Process

In a very confusing press conference, Mike McDaniel couldn’t 100% confirm that he is the Miami Dolphins head coach, but did say he will be a part of the Dolphins’ general manager interview process.

When asked if he is staying on as the head coach of the Dolphins, McDaniel said it is his understanding that he is the coach of the Miami Dolphins until told otherwise.

But a few minutes later, he stated he would be part of the general manager interview and hiring process.

Kind of a mixed message to many fans.

If he is going to have a voice and say in who the team’s general manager is, then it sounds like he is keeping his job as head coach, but he didn’t want to publicly commit to saying he was told he is staying on as the head coach.

For years, the Dolphins have been accused of having a dysfunctional organization, and this is another confusing approach to take, letting a coach who is clearly on the hot seat have a voice and say in who the next general manager is.

Clearly, this next general manager will have his hands tied and be forced to work with McDaniel, and McDaniel will not give a vote of confidence to any candidate interviewing unless he feels they will protect him at all costs.

So, the odds of Miami hiring “the best man for the job” seem to be a farce, and the Dolphins are doing “Dolphins Things” that have led to this organization not making the playoffs in 25+ years.

In other news at the press conference, McDaniel said Darren Waller will take a few weeks and decide if he wants to play again in 2026.

McDaniel will have a meeting with Tua on Tuesday at 8 am, and McDaniel said the team will have an open competition for the starting quarterback job next season, and he didn’t shut the door on Quinn Ewers possibly starting next year.

Earlier in the day, Tua spoke to the press, and when asked if he would be open to a fresh start elsewhere, he said yes.

McDaniel said he hasn’t spoken with Tyreek Hill about returning next season.

McDaniel said he will speak with Stephen Ross later this week and they will discuss what needs to be discussed.

McDaniel, when asked if the Dolphins need a full rebuild, said he doesn’t envision a full rebuild.

And this is the most disappointing thing from today: the Dolphins are going full half-measure again and will look to put a band-aid over a gunshot wound, and they will look to add aging veterans and not try to build this and correct this the right way.

The Dolphins need to focus on its youth, and play the kids and not have mediocre veterans blocking their progress and getting playing time over them.
