Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin seems content to sit out this season and not pursue any coaching or media jobs. But this time next year, he could rank be holding a record-setting NFL contract.
According to Front Office Sports, Tomlin is expected to be the subject of a bidding war between NBC, Amazon and Netflix, all of whom would want him to become a highly-paid studio analyst for their NFL coverage.
Securing Tomlin's services would reportedly require a network doubling the current record for a studio analyst contract. While he may not receive the kind of money that Tony Romo, Troy Aikman or Tom Brady make, he could be looking at a $10 million per year salary.
"The big money lies in becoming a No. 1 game analyst. The likes of Brady, Aikman, Romo, Cris Collinsworth of NBC, and Kirk Herbstreit of Prime are now effectively the faces and of their respective employers," FOS reported. "Studio analysts, on the other hand, make in the $5 million range, although some have earned more due to a variety of factors. Demand for Tomlin could push him into the eight-figure range, even as a studio analyst," FOS reported.
"Another factor that could move his number: There is now a dearth of ex-NFL coaches on the air. For what it’s worth, Tomlin was making around $16 million a year as the Steelers’ coach.". "Brady pockets an eye-watering $37.5 million a year from Fox while Aikman and Romo make around $19 million. There are no open game analyst jobs right now."
Tomlin was head coach of the Steelers from 2007 to 2025, famously going all 19 seasons without a losing record and setting an NFL record in the process. He led the Steelers to two Super Bowl appearances and won it all in Super Bowl XLIII.
But over the past few years, while the team has frequently been in the playoff conversation, they have not won any postseason games at all. Within hours of going one-and-done in the playoffs again in January, Tomlin resigned.
We've barely heard anything from Tomlin since he left the team, but if the networks have their way, we'll be hearing a lot out of him every Sunday for years to come.
