Mike Tomlin Not Worried About Contract Extension

UNITY TWP., Pa. — It does not appear that Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin will be getting a contract extension before the start of the 2023 season.

It also does not appear to bother him.

Tomlin opening training camp by speaking with the Pittsburgh media after his players reported to St. Vincent College on Wednesday. Traditionally, the Steelers have extended their head coach the summer when he has two seasons remaining on his deal. The Steelers have also usually made the announcement of that extension at the start of training camp.

Tomlin enters 2023 with two seasons left on his contract, but he will also apparently enter without a new deal. He made his press conference appearance without the accompaniment of president Art Rooney II, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Tomlin is unlikely to get an extension this offseason.

That’s the plan the Steelers followed the last time Tomlin’s contract came up. He was made to wait until the summer before his contract expired and got a three-year extension in 2021.

When asked about a potential extension, Tomlin said that he hadn’t even considered it, and that he is not concerned about his contract at this point in the year.

“Wow, I hadn’t even thought about,” Tomlin said. “I’m just at the stage of my career where I don’t care about contracts, to be honest with you, man. I acknowledge that I’ve seen more days than I’m gonna see. That’s just the nature of this thing. I appreciate the opportunity. I’m singularly focused. I’m thankful that I’m in a stage in life and in my career that that’s a non-issue for me.”

Whether he gets a contract extension this season or next season, there does not appear to be any level of dissent between the organization and the head coach and all signs point to him eventually getting a new deal that will keep him as the Steelers head coach beyond 2024.

Tomlin is entering his 17th season as the Steelers head coach and has a 171-102-2 career record, including the postseason. He is second all-time in Steelers history with 258 games coached, 163 wins and is first with a .636 winning percentage.
