When the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to pass on Shedeur Sanders for five straight rounds, many imagined it had to be because the team knew it was signing Aaron Rodgers.
The team has reportedly been in talks with Rodgers about coming to Pittsburgh for weeks now. And while head coach Mike Tomlin wouldn't tip his hand, he did say that the organization's conversations with the four-time MVP have been "really productive."
"We've had good conversations. We feel good about our plan at the position," Tomlin told the NFL Network. "Certainly, it's yet to be revealed at this point. And I understand the angst in your community [the media] and the community that supports us."
When asked by host Rich Eisen if the speculation was fair, Tomlin laughed and said:
"Rich, I'll give you the latitude to run with it because I know you will anyway... We've had conversations. We feel good about our plan at the position. We're excited about what potentially awaits us there."
The Steelers' search for a franchise QB has gone on for three seasons now after cycling through Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, Mason Rudolph, Justin Fields and Russell Wilson in the aftermath of Big Ben's retirement.
And while the franchise's record has never dipped below .500 under Tomlin, playoff success has mostly eluded them for almost a decade now.
We'll see if Aaron Rodgers is (potentially) able to change that. However even if he does, it's hard to imagine the future Hall of Famer playing much further than 2026.
The Steelers selected Will Howard with the 185th pick in the sixth-round. He joins Rudolph and Skylar Thompson as the only quarterbacks on the team's roster right now.
