Mike Tomlin's odd decision before the Steelers vs. Browns game makes a lot more sense after Nick Herbig's dominant performance

Nick Herbig will forever be the poster child for what development at the NFL level looks like. If you told every team in the league that he would turn into a player who was on pace to record double-digit sacks despite not starting, he would have been gone well before round four of the NFL Draft.

But speaking of starters, Mike Tomlin threw a wrinkle in pregame announcements that not everyone caught. Obviously, there are only 11 starters on each side of the ball. But on Sunday in Pittsburgh, there were 12 on defense.

That 12th was Nick Herbig, with his performance proving Mike Tomlin's decision right.

Nick Herbig has career game after being named among defensive starters

Herbig recorded two sacks and eight pressures on the day. He now leads the Steelers in sacks despite missing Week 1 and playing behind Alex Highsmith, and he has gone from 3.5 sacks in his rookie season to 5.5 last year, to 4.5 with over 12 games remaining this year. He's been amazing, and it's why Mike Tomlin didn't demote him despite the return of Alex Highsmith to the lineup.

"Right now, he's playing at a pretty high level," said Mike Tomlin of Nick Herbig after the game via the Steelers YouTube channel. "That's why I introduced 12 defenders today." Herbig seemed surprised by the decision from Tomlin when asked about it. It obviously served as a boost of confidence for the young pass rusher, as he proved Coach Tomlin right.

"I wasn't expecting that at all," said Herbig of the decision after the game. "Coach T told me before the game and I just went out with great pride and honor, because I know all the great, legendary players that have come through these buildings and walked the same halls as me. Just the fact that they have that belief in me, that respect for me, to allow me to run out of the tunnel all the guys, I'm truly blessed."

If there is one position you can never have enough of in the NFL, it's pass rusher and corner . Alex Highsmith, Jack Sawyer, Nick Herbig, and T.J. Watt form the best foursome of EDGE rushers in the league. So you can give what titles you like, but it's clear the Steelers have a trio they can't keep off the field.
