Minkah Fitzpatrick Should Help Secondary Issues

Last season, the Dolphins had issues all over the secondary.

In the cornerback room, there was inconsistency opposite Jalen Ramsey as Kendall Fuller, Miami’s off-season signing to replace the oft-injured Xavien Howard, did not pan out.

Along with his injuries, he was unable to produce at a high level, and when he was not on the field, the other cornerbacks on the roster were not up to the task.

While Ramsey was still solid, he was not the same player that he was just a few years ago in Los Angeles.

And that does not even address what was happening in the safety room with Jevon Holland and Jordan Poyer.

Holland could not recreate the play that he had in the first few years of his career, while Poyer had lost a few steps.

While Chris Grier, Mike McDaniel, and Anthony Weaver still have some items to fix, it is clear which direction they took to correct the issues.

Go younger.

Along with adding stop-gap options in Ashtyn Davis and Ifeatu Melifonwu, Miami also chose to let young players have competition at the outside cornerback spot.

Cam SmithEthan Bonner, and Storm Duck will battle to replace Fuller, who was released, while Kader Kohou should be back to handle the nickel position.

It seems pretty obvious that Miami will add another stop-gap option at the other corner to replace Ramsey.

With Miami losing two older veterans in Poyer and Ramsey, they inarguably upgraded at the safety spot with Minkah Fitzpatrick, a former all-pro.

Fitzpatrick, only 28 years old, will either have his contract restructured or extended depending on how well he plays this season.

However he plays, he will be better than Poyer.

While the rebuild in the secondary is not over, as Miami still needs to grab a corner for this season and look to next year’s draft for the future of the spot, it is clear the secondary is headed in the right direction.

After Ramsey forced his way out, things looked bleak for Miami’s pass defense.

But no,w heading into July, it looks like things are on the upswing.

The Fitzpatrick trade is a good start.

Miami needs to keep building to keep the momentum.
