The salary cap has been a major factor over the last few years for the Minnesota Vikings. The 2024 season has an astounding amount of dead money at $65,451,865 as they are still dealing with quarterback Kirk Cousins' money. It is the last season they will be dealing with a lot of dead money and things look much healthier moving forward.
After the Vikings extended defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, the salary cap saw a shift. This season, the Vikings have $11,209,513 in remaining salary cap space which they will likely roll over a decent portion of that. Here is how things break down for the salary cap.
The Vikings don't just have a healthy salary cap situation this season in terms of current space, they are also set up for the future. The 2025 season is currently projected to have $76,007,788 in salary cap space. Over The Cap has updated their projections with $272,500,000 in projected space for the 2025 season. The Vikings' space will also include whatever money they roll over, which will likely be in the neighborhood of $7-8 million depending on a number of factors.
The Vikings giving Phillips an extension after week one was interesting, especially since they haven't really done anything in-season in the Kwesi Adofo-Mensah era in terms of a contract extension.
The cap space the Vikings have could bring multiple extensions back to the table. There has been a lot of talk that Camryn Bynum has been in discussions with the team on an extension and getting him done would certainly be a smart idea.
These were my predictions on potential extensions when I wrote about it before week one.
There is certainly room for the Vikings to make something work if they wanted to. The question remains if both sides would want to during the season.
