Minnesota Vikings Lose Another Offensive Weapon For The Season

Running back Cam Akers will miss the remainder of the 2023 season after he tore his Achilles in yesterday’s win over the Atlanta Falcons. Akers has dealt with this injury before, and this is the second time this has happened to him in his career. The running back was brought over from the Los Angeles Rams earlier this season to add some depth to the running back room in Minnesota.

Akers rushed for 25 yards and caught three passes for 13 yards on Sunday before going down with the injury. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters immediately after the game that he “can’t confirm the severity at this time, but that is what we’re fearing” regarding the team believing it is a season-ending injury.

Minnesota Vikings Injury Bug

Akers established himself as the starting running back in Los Angeles back in 2020 when he rushed for 625 yards in his rookie year before suffering a torn Achilles in 2021. He picked up the pace again in 2022 when he rushed for 786 yards but started to decline in production the following year. In total, Akers has rushed for 1,581 yards and 11 touchdowns in his young career, however, with another significant injury, his career is definitely in question.

The Vikings have improved to 5-4 on the year after starting 1-4. They currently sit in second place in the NFC North only trailing the 6-2 Detroit Lions. However, with all of these injuries, the team will have to step it up big time if they want to compete for a playoff spot. They will host the New Orleans Saints next week, which will be a great indicator of how the rest of the season will pan out.
