Over the course of the Minnesota Vikings offseason, they made it very clear how important getting compensatory picks was. The plan was laid out over the first 48 hours with multiple free agent signings that were cut from their previous teams versus those whose contracts expired.
Once the compensatory period of free agency ended, the Vikings were set to get third and fourth round picks for losing Sam Darnold to the Seattle Seahawks and Daniel Jones to the Indianapolis Colts. Where things currently sit might not be what gets awarded come March when they get awarded.
The third round pick for Darnold is likely set in stone right now with his high salary, but the pick for Jones could end up decreasing to a fifth-round pick based on playing time. Jones is firmly in the fourth-round pick category, but that includes his snap share at 60.6%. He will need to start a significant amount of games for that to stay, and it could happen with Anthony Richardson consistently being hurt.
The other really intriguing thing with the compensatory picks is Trent Sherfield. Right now, he qualifies based on Over The Cap's projections by just five spots. He is 681st of the 685 qualifying contracts. That could change significantly throughout the course of the season. If Sherfield plays a significant amount of snaps this year
The qualifying formula is relatively simple. Contracts are awarded points based on average annual value with the top being Dak Prescott at 1,958. After that, you get anywhere from 0-100 points based on the percentage of snaps played (25% minimum). The only other way to get points is to make either the AP All Pro or PFWA On Field Awards list. Because so much of the formula is based on what happens in season, these are just projections.
The Vikings could be a beneficiary of three compensatory selections, which would be huge in building out the depth of the roster. However, nothing is certain right now, and it will be worth monitoring throughout the season.
