Missouri governor refuses to address specifics about Andy Reid’s son Britt’s reduced sentence despite massive backlash

No request, official or otherwise, was made on behalf of Mr. Reid for this commutation. Mark Parson said

Back in 2022, Britt, the son of the Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, was sentenced to three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a DWI felony, which resulted in serious physical injuries to many, including a 5-year-old girl. According to reports, Britt was driving 84mph in a 65mph zone before hitting two parked vehicles in Kansas City just days ahead of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl game in February 2021.

Six people were injured in the crash, including then 5-year-old Ariel Young. She suffered a traumatic brain injury in the accident and was in a coma for 11 days. She spent nearly 2 months in hospital following the tragic accident. Apart from speeding, Reid also admitted to having 3 or 4 drinks before the accident.

Parson spent the last 16 months in prison following his sentencing. And now, the Governor has commuted his prison sentence to a house arrest. According to reports, he is to work at least 30 hours a week while serving the rest of his sentencing in house arrest.

Missouri Governor’s decision to commute Britt Reid’s sentence received backlash

After commuting Britt Reid’s sentencing, Missouri Governor Mike Parson’s office claimed that Andy Reid’s son has served more prison time than many convicted for similar felonies. However, his decision has not been received well by many.

In a recent interview with ESPN, Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker claimed she wouldn’t have agreed to the plea deal if she knew Britt would only serve one and a half years in prison. Ariel Young’s parents also claimed they were disgusted by the Governor’s action.

I really want my community to see a system of justice, believe that the system of justice will work for them. It's very difficult to have people put that kind of faith in this system. And it took sort of a punch to the face by this action. Jean Peters Baker told ESPN

Mike Parson is a self-proclaimed ‘avid’ Cheifs fan. Many believe Britt wouldn’t have gotten his sentence reduced if he is not the son of the Chiefs head coach.
